MSN Island Facility

MSN Island

MSN Island is situated at Bogale Township, Pyapon District of the Ayayarwady Delta Region, which is within the Bogale River, 7.5 miles (1 hour by boat) from Bogale down town. The Island is regularly flooded by tidal water throughout the year. The area of the island is approximately 40 acres (16 ha), most of which is covered with mangrove trees. Sonneratia caseolaris is the  dominant species at present. MSN would like to increase the species diversity and introduce rare and endangered mangrove species in order to promote multi-species to grow in the area.

MSN Island location

MSN is trying to establish the trial demonstration plots of mangrove trees, focusing on the conservation of endangered mangrove species by setting-up mangrove nursery units, plots of trial species as well as conservation plots.

MSN has collected propagules and seeds of rare and endangered mangrove species, mainly from Kyauk Pyu Township of Rakhine State mangrove forest area and transported them to the island. These propagules and seeds were planted at the nursery area of the environment education and research center and transplanted into the demonstration plots on the island.

Detailed list of rare species planted in the island demonstration plots and the nursery area are as follows;

Mangrove herbal medicinal plants trial plot

MSN also established a mangrove herbal plant garden on MSN Island. The herbal plant garden area is about 60 ft X 100 ft. Most of the mangrove herbal plants were collected from Mainmahla Island and Byone Hmawe Island (Reserved Forest area).  Mainmahla Island is an ASEAN HERITAGE PARK.  Byone Hmawe Island is a mangrove conservation area under the control of the Forest Department.  MSN has already planted some mangrove herbal plants (please see below table) and has a plan to grow  suitable mangrove herbal plant continuously.

  • Environmental Education and Research Center Facility

With the financial support of AusAid DAP under Australian Embassy of Myanmar, MSN established an Environmental Education and Research Center on MSN Island, which includes a landing jetty, a 600 feet wooden post and bamboo footpath passing through the existing mangrove forest, an education center building, a warehouse, dining hall and an electrical backup generator.

A solar electrical system and phone communication have also been installed.

A small-scale commercial plantation plot, woodlot plantation plot and a small-scale integrated farming pond have also been established on the island for the demonstration purposes.
